A great free service to transfer files

technologyEdward Kiledjian

As a casual internet user, you probably don't need to send large files too often but there are times when a clean, fast and simple solution can be a lifesaver (sharing pictures, video, etc).

There are a bunch of for pay services catering primarily to the enterprise space but what does a user do? Enter WeTransfer.com. The site is clean, simple and functional. The free version (doesn't even require an account) allows you to send files of up to 2GB (per transfer).

When you visit the site, you are greeted with a little transfer box on the left and a beautiful sponsored background covers the rest of the page. This one is a house ad but most a unobtrusive and visually appealing.

All of you interaction will be with the little box on the left hand side.

You can enter up to 20 recipient email addresses, you enter your own email address (of it auto populates this if you have sent files in the past and haven't cleared your cache) and you choose files up to 2GB. You press Transfer and wait for your files to be uploaded.

Once uploaded, your recipients will receive an email with a link to download all of the files as a single compressed cross-platform ZIP.

In my testing, every recipient I sent files to received the notification email (aka it never went to SPAM which is a good thing). You receive an emailed confirming the recipients, your message and the download link.

If you make an error with an email address, you will receive another email from WeTransfer notifying you that the recipient email bounced. For each recipient that downloads the files, you will receive an email specifying who downloaded the files, which files and when.

Another advantage is that the site is clean for your file recipients. There aren't any misleading banner ads, pop-up ads or other elements that distract from your transfer or that could be dangerous,

This is what the download page looks like.

What about upload and download speeds? I compared upload speeds on a 2GB file to WeTransfer, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and Dropbox. All of the services took about the same about of time. This means that you are not penalized by using the free service (no intentional slow downs). Every transfer I threw at it worked at almost my maximum internet connection upload speed.

There are a handful of other sites that offer free file transfer services but every single one of them had ugly ad covered websites. One even showed adult content.

My conclusion is that WeTransfer is a great reliable free service that will likely fill a gap most home users have. You are sending your files to a third party so I recommend zipping all of your files in an archive (Zip, RAR, DMG, etc) and using that format's native encryption function. This will make sure that no one (except the intended recipients) will be allowed to uncompress and access your files.

Blackberry 10 receives Microsoft OneDrive client

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about Microsoft rebranding its SkyDrive cloud storage service to Microsoft OneDrive (link).

BkBlackberry has done a great job integrating cloud storage providers into its base os on BB10 devices. Out of the gate, BB10 supports Dropbox and Box. Now you can add Microsoft OneDrive support to that list with the availability of the Connect to Microsoft OneDrive app (link).

The functionality of this new add on is exactly the same  as that of Dropbox and Box. The deep integration means you can upload (automatically) device content to OneDrive. You can access files stored on OneDrive seamlessly on your device.

We have become increasingly dependant on our online services and when they go down , we are lost and the world loses meaning. Ok.. maybe its not that bad but we still want to know whether the service is down or it's just us.

The next time your online service isn't working, check out their online services status dashboard and rest easy knowing its not your fault (unless your internet is down, in which case you should panic).

As a Macbook owner and an iPhone user, I get the a cold sweat down my back when key Apple services are down. Is iMessage down or is it just me? Is Facetime down or is it my internet connection?

All good questions that can be easily answered by visiting Apple's detailed service status dashboard site (link).

Is Twitter down?

Everyone loves Twitter and it now breaks news faster than any other news distribution outlet. When it goes down, many news agencies panic. If you want to know if Twitter is really down, head over to their service status page (link).

Is CloudFlare down?

CloudFlare has become the last line of defence between many small or medium internet sites and hackers. Do you want to know if their service is operating fully, check out their special webpage (link).

In the above image, you can see a couple of sites re-routing traffic to other locations. This could be because of scheduled maintenance.

Microsoft SkyDrive to become OneDrive

British Sky Broadcasting Group won a court battle with Microsoft last year and the settlement included an undisclosed amount of compensation and Microsoft agreed to change the name of its infringing SkyDrive product.

Now Microsoft has announced that Skydrive will be rebranded to OneDrive (link). They are promising that OneDrive is everything Skydrive is and more. What the more means is anyone's guess and Skydrive hasn't been the most popular consumer online cloud storage service.

No date of when the new service will go live but you can give them your email address and they will let you know.

Most of us have gotten use to free storage tiers from the various cloud storage providers (Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive, Dropbox, box.net, etc). Often times this free tier is enough to storage basic files and share things once in a while. Now SugarSync has said No More Free Storage. (link)

The company claims this is being done to allow Sugarsync to concentrate on updates and service improvements. The lowest cost paid tier will be $7.49 a month for 60GB of storage.

TechCrunch is reporting that SugarSync will be offering 75% discounts for existing customers moving to one of the paid tiers (link).
