DuckDuckGo browser: privacy by default
In an online landscape often dominated by surveillance-based business models and data extraction, DuckDuckGo Browser stands out as a privacy-first alternative that prioritises simplicity and protection. For users seeking straightforward privacy without complex configurations, DuckDuckGo delivers — though its architecture and feature set differ from traditional browsers.
What it is
DuckDuckGo Private Browser is a native application for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android that leverages operating-system-provided rendering engines rather than forking Chromium. On Windows and Android, it uses Blink via WebView2 and Android WebView. On macOS and iOS, it relies on WebKit, the same engine powering Safari.
Key features include:
Zero tracking by default — no search history or browsing data stored or transmitted to DuckDuckGo’s servers
Comprehensive tracker blocking — powered by the open-source Tracker Radar, which identifies tracking domains
Fire Button — one-tap deletion of all browsing data, tabs and cookies
Burn on Exit — automatic clearing of tabs and data on close (introduced May 2025 for Windows)
Email Protection — @duck.com addresses that strip trackers from messages (about 85 per cent found during beta)
Cookie consent management — automatically selects privacy-preserving options
Global Privacy Control (GPC) — sends legally binding opt-out signals in applicable jurisdictions
Site exclusion — persistent blocking of unwanted domains from search results (September 2025)
AI image filtering — option to hide AI-generated images from search results (mid-July 2025)
Who runs it
DuckDuckGo Browser is developed by DuckDuckGo Inc., the company behind the search engine founded by Gabriel Weinberg in 2008. Headquartered in Paoli, Pennsylvania, it remains privately held, with Weinberg serving as chief executive officer. Mobile browsers launched in 2018; macOS followed in 2022 and Windows in 2023.
Operating model
DuckDuckGo has been profitable since 2014 through a simple model that avoids behavioural profiling.
Free tier — full privacy features at no cost
Privacy Pro subscription — launched April 2024, priced at US$9.99 monthly or US$99.99 yearly (C$13.99/C$139.99 in Canada). On September 4, 2025, the plan expanded to include access to advanced AI models (GPT-5, GPT-4o, Claude 4 Sonnet, Llama 4 Maverick) via Duck.ai, VPN protection across five devices, U.S.-based Personal Information Removal and Identity Theft Restoration.
Revenue comes from contextual advertising — based solely on search terms — plus non-tracking affiliate partnerships with Amazon and eBay. The company has raised at least US$100 million in a 2021 secondary transaction, with total funding reported around US$113 million.
Platforms and updates
Available on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. The Android version includes App Tracking Protection, which blocks trackers across apps through an on-device VPN. Linux support has no announced timeline.
Updates are distributed through the App Store, Google Play, automatic Windows updates and direct macOS downloads. A visual redesign in July 2025 refined icons, colours and interface elements while maintaining privacy-first functionality.
Security architecture
DuckDuckGo builds on secure rendering engines — WebKit on Apple platforms and Blink on Windows and Android — with sandboxing, memory isolation and regular security updates.
It layers multiple protections: Third-Party Tracker Loading Protection, Cookie Protection, Link and Referrer Tracking Protection, Fingerprinting defences, CNAME Cloaking, and Embedded Social Content blocking.
Smarter Encryption automatically upgrades connections to HTTPS.
Scam Blocker warns about phishing and malware sites, using Netcraft feeds for VPN blocklists while keeping checks local and anonymous.
All browsing data stays local by default, with optional end-to-end encrypted Sync & Backup for bookmarks and passwords.
Privacy posture
DuckDuckGo’s policy: “We don’t track you.” The browser temporarily uses limited device info (like IP address) to serve content and prevent abuse but doesn’t store it. Optional features requiring personal data — such as Email Protection — clearly disclose use and offer opt-outs.
A 2022 review found Microsoft trackers were allowed under a syndication deal. DuckDuckGo fixed this on August 5, 2022, and renegotiated terms. The incident underscored the value of transparency and user oversight.
Bottom line
DuckDuckGo Browser offers a privacy-first, low-maintenance experience that blocks trackers and minimises data collection by default. With Smarter Encryption, Fire Button, Email Protection and optional VPN integration, it provides practical privacy without complexity. Its simplicity and verifiable stance on data protection make it a credible alternative for users who value anonymity over extensive customisation.
