What if your year-end bonus included a piece of actual gold?

That is what Dreame Technology, a Chinese smart home appliance company known for robot vacuums, did in late December 2025. Founder and CEO Yu Hao said the company would give each employee one gram of gold, in addition to its regular year-end bonus. Ten top performers were also offered a trip to Antarctica.

On the surface, it is a striking idea: simple, tangible and hard to ignore. With roughly 18,500 employees and gold priced at about 1,400 yuan per gram, the giveaway works out to an estimated 26 million yuan, or about US$3.7 million.

The gesture also lands in a context where performance, competition and retention pressures are real. Dreame, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Suzhou, has expanded quickly in a crowded category. In the first three quarters of 2025, it captured 12.4 per cent of the global robot vacuum market, ranking third worldwide. Chinese brands collectively account for close to 70 per cent of global shipments, underscoring how concentrated and fast-moving the space has become.

Employee rewards like this can be meaningful, but they are not a substitute for the fundamentals: fair pay, clear expectations, strong leadership and sustainable workload. Still, when those basics are in place, a distinctive gesture can reinforce culture and signal appreciation in a way people remember.
