Google Play Music coming to Canada
Google launch a new service at the 2013 Google IO conference called Google Play Music All Access. This is a streaming radio service (competing with Spotify and RDIO) which typically costs $US 9.99/month for all you can eat music.
My industry contacts tell me that Google is putting the finishing touches (aka finalizing the music library agreements) on the service and expect it to launch early September. We expected it to cost the same $9.99 a month (same as the US price).
You will be able to use this on IOS through some third-party apps (my favorite is gMusic).
Google Nexus 4 now cheaper
The Nexus 4 is now $100 cheaper (globally). In Canada (and the US) you can pickup an 8GB Nexus 4 for $199 a 16GB version is now $249.

We've lowered the price of #Nexus4. Get it for 25% off or more in Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, Korea, US, UK: http://t.co/g8vIKtBC9N
— Google Play (@GooglePlay) August 28, 2013
With this type of a discount, its clear Google is attempting to clear inventory before the release of a successor (which we expect sometime in October or November). If you don't need 4G (LTE) speed then this is a fantastic deal for an unlocked phone.
Comparing the Nexus 4 to the Nexus 5
Based on the rumors I am hearing, the next version of a Nexus phone may have a bigger higher resolution screen but the quality difference will be more of a technical win than a practical one. The Nexus 4's screen is so good any upgrade wouldn't be noticeable to average Joe.
We expect a slight bump in processor speed but considering the Nexus 4 has a quad-core processor, improvements will be incremental and not revolutionary.
We expect the Nexus 5 to have significantly improved GPU performance for better gaming performance. Which could be good but maybe not enough to justify changing a phone.
We expect the Nexus 5 to have LTE. If you need LTE then the NExus 5 may be better but for most users, good 3G performance is perfectly acceptable.
Verdict
If you need a new unlocked phone then this is a fantastic deal for an unlocked phone.I say get it while its available.
“Google Play Tweeted and France is now getting the $100 off special price also.”
Sony's Android Z1 Honami Smartphone leak

Is the Internet built for spying?
The one and only internet
<img src="uploads/2025/b57c63d44e.jpg" alt="">
Edward Snowden is the (now famous) NSA leaker that exposed many of the US intelligence community's most secretive tools to the world. As expected, the public reacted (some would say over-reacted).
There is one internet
I believe the Internet will be recorded in history as one of the great evolutionary drivers. With the global availability of human knowledge and the ability to create brand new beneficial services (like the Scanadu home health monitor).
Society has become so dependent on the fragile but powerful internet that it is inconceivable to cut oneself off from it completely (unless you want to live in a log cabin in the woods).
The Internet is a reflection of humanity
The internet is a mirror of our world. There are good people doing fantastic things with it to help every living being on our blue marbel. On the other extreme are the thiefs, scammers and "bad people".
Just like the internet amplifies the good, it amplified the bad.
Is the internet a tool for spying?
A great many readers are upset about the scope of NSA spying revealed by Edward Snowden. Some say that you shouldn't worry is you have nothing to hide but I disagree. Whether you believe these leaks are good or bad, they are forcing us to have an educated dialog about what we think is acceptable and what isn't.
Everyone working in security always assumed that governments were conducting these kinds of activities and these revelations upset us less because we were mentally prepared for them.
There is no tools or technique to be 100% safe and spy-proof on the internet. Even encryption leaves powerful traces of activity we call meta data :
- who you emailed
- how often you emailed them
- where your email originated from
Investigative journalists also discovered that the US Postal Service was also recording meta-data from letters (same as the above but for real-world physical letters and packages).
The internet amplified business and allowed companies like Amazon to create new consummer benefiting models. The internet amplifies espionage capabilities by allowing governments to slurp up an incredibly large amount of data quickly and easily.
The difference between government espionage and economic espionage
"But we stole stuff to keep you free and ... safe. We didn't steal stuff to make you rich, which is really the nub of the issue between ourselves and the Chinese." - Retired Gen. Michael Hayden, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency the former head of the National Security Agency from CNBC
I think the more important question is related to economic espionage. Economic espionage means a foreign country (other than the one that owns an innovation) will benefit from the hard work of another without having incurred the costs and risks of R&D. This could leads to an incredible strategic advantage that sometimes becomes irrecoverable (think of Nortel).
People are quick to point the finger at China but I want to burst your bubble and say we simply don't know. The intelligence communities around the world keep tabs on foreign espionage but the general public rarely gets unbiased information.
As part of our national discussions about government espionage, we need to debate economic espionage policy and determine if this is something we (as the population) want our own countries doing.
Spying for protection
The reality is that government espionage is used to keep the population safe by foiling terrorism plots early. This is a tool that we (the population) can't take away from our agencies since it benefits us (without the general population realizing).
I hope the debate also leads to discussions about how (and if) this information is used to ensure a level economic playing field between countries. I want to ensure that my government is helping to protect the economic values of the R&D performed by our companies. I want our G20 countries to adopt much clearer cooperation pacts to help protect from economic espionage and to provide helpful guidance to Chief Information Security Officers working on these targeted companies.
Discussions about "Should the government be doing this" aren't useful since that ship has sailed. Discuss how the information can be used and how it should be leveraged to protect the economic engine of our countries (company innovation).
iPhone 5s rumor now in grey

Move your email service to Switzerland
Since the PRISM revelations, we have seen a handful of "secure" email services shutter their doors or close their email services (Silent Circle, Lavabit, etc). Then came the shutdown of websites dependent on anonymity of sources (Groklaw).
With all the turmoil, you may be looking for an email service less likely to bend to the will of the NSA (or other national security agency). I can't think of a better country than Switzerland. The email service recommended by the founder of Groklaw is now offering a less expensive lite of its email service.
MyKolab's lite version offers a simple email service with no additional add-ons (calendar, tasks, etc) for $5.25US per month. The assumption is that a Swiss company can remain more independent and isn't subject to pressure from foreign intelligence agencies.
This sounds great but remember that the US and UK are slurping up internet information at the carrier level so even if Kolab doesn't provide a backdoor, the agencies can still take-in the data as it makes its way through the internet. We also know that all encrypted emails are saved for later analysis and email leaves a trail of metadata (who you emailed, when and how many times).
I understand why people are upset but its important to remember that nothing revealed so far touches pre-crime and shouldn't cause a panic for the average user. I don't think using this type of service makes you more secure. If you want absolute security, nothing beats a secret face to face meeting.
41 Megapixel Nokia 1020 coming to Telus
It seems Telus will carry the Windows Phone based Nokia 1020 smartphone. It is the first new Windows Phone to be sold by the carrier since the Nokia Lumia 800 in 2012. It is expected that Telus will carry other Nokia Lumia models including the 625.
The Nokia Lumia is also coming to Rogers in October so it will be interesting to see how they compete with this device.
For those that don't know, the Lumia 1020 is a smartphone with an incredible 41 megapixel camera. It is actually the best camera on any smartphone right now and amazes everyone who uses it. If you are already an iPhone or Android user then you would find the Windows Phone ecosystem severely limiting (huge lack of apps). If you are coming from a dumb-phone or feature-phone then you will love the Windows Phone because it is easy to use and decently powerful.
iPhone 5C Spy pics at Pegatron
Although these can be fake, a quick investigation tends to support the fact that these were talen from the Pegatron plant in Shanghai.
The Sina Weibo post says this was an employee working in quality control and thus we get this pic that shows devices charging in preparation for testing.

Everything should be revealed at the September 10 launch so we won't have to speculate much longer.

The best way to run Android apps on a Windows PC
I wrote about [Bluestack](http://www.kiledjian.com/main/2012/12/7/run-any-android-app-on-your-windows-or-mac-computer.html) and how they provide a beta emulation software that allows you to run some Android software on a Windows or Mac PC. Emulation is good when you don't have any other option but now a team of Chinese developers from [Socketeq](http://www.socketeq.com/) has pushed their Android on Windows just a little bit further.
Instead of using emulation which is slower and more limiting, they have created a system where Android runs on top of the Windows kernel (without emulation). They also claim that this approach allows you to run all Android applications including the resource intensive 3D games.
Based on the current beta version, it seems pretty solid but still has some limitations. Multi-touch isn't supported but you can accomplish most actions with your mouse. The official Google apps aren't included but there is no doubt this will be hacked in later on by some creative users.
You can watch their demo video here:

Right now, you have to download the app from their site by going here and clicking download:
Caffeinated sugar is here
Jacked Up Caffeinated Baking Sugar is the next step for caffeine addicts. Now all of your favorite baked goods can deliver a constant dose of stimulating caffeine to keep you going (muffins, cookies, breads, etc).
1 tsp of the caffein laden sugar delivers 46 mg of caffeine. This is about a third of the caffeine dose you would get from a standard cup of commercial coffee.
Keeping this comparison in mind, decide how much of a kick you want from your morning muffin.

Mingchi Kuo (from KGI securities) is an always opinionated analyst with a fairly good track record is pontificating that the Moto X will be a hit but that the new Nexus 7 will be a bust.
Kuo uses sources from manufacturers and inside telcos and believes there will be strong adoption of the Moto X devices (especially in light of the 500M$ advertising budget).

Google Nexus 5 rumors
Now that the MotoX is released, we can start concentrating on Nexus 5 rumors. To be completely transparent, we don't even know if there will be a Nexus 5 but reading rumors can be fun.
Although some speculated that Motorola may build the next Nexus, a Vietnamese rumor site believes the device will be made by LG, contain a Qualcomm SnapDragon 800 processor, have a glass back and have no back button.
Tin He believes the LG G2 is the model of the upcoming Nexus 5 so you can start wetting your appetite by reading that products spec sheet.
