Data Breaches on the Rise - Check if You've Been Pwned
Data breaches are becoming more frequent and severe. In 2023, the number of reported data breaches in the U.S. rose 78% to a record 3,205 incidents. Some of the largest breaches in history, like Yahoo, Marriott, and Equifax, have leaked hundreds of millions of records containing sensitive personal information. It's important to be aware if your data has been compromised so you can take steps to protect yourself. One reputable tool for this is Have I Been Pwned (HIBP).
What is Have I Been Pwned?
Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) is a free online resource that allows you to check if your email address or password has been exposed in a data breach. It was created by well-known security researcher Troy Hunt in 2013. The catchy name comes from the hacker slang "pwned", meaning to compromise or take control of an account. HIBP maintains a massive database of billions of compromised accounts from thousands of data breaches.
You can easily search this database to see if your information is included.
Instructions for using HIBP:
- Visit https://haveibeenpwned.com/
- Input your email address
- Click on "pwned?"
Check the outcomes to see if your email was included in any breaches. You can also register to receive notifications if your email is detected in any breaches.
If Your Email Appears
If your email shows up in the HIBP search findings, don't worry. It doesn't necessarily indicate that your accounts have been compromised. However, it's advisable to:
- Update your password on any websites listed in the results.
- If you use that password for accounts, change those as well.
- Activate two-factor authentication whenever feasible for added security.
- Be vigilant for any suspicious activity or messages linked to the breached accounts.
By following these measures, you can help prevent the use of your exposed data. Monitoring HIBP and refreshing compromised passwords enhances your security.
How to Pack Light: The Rick Steves' Best-Case Scenario Approach
Rick Steves, a veteran traveller and author of guidebooks, speaks about efficiency in packing for your next great adventure, which is one of the topics topping his many tips. He says one of the most important is to plan for the best-case scenario. In this post, let's look at how to prepare for the best and how that can change everything about how you pack and how amazing it will be when you travel.
Mindset to Best Case
Most people feel like packing for every eventuality. This usually results in overpacking and lugging around a lot of stuff that will never be touched. It's better, says Rick Steves, to plan for the best-case scenario.
That is packing only what you believe to be essential and having faith in your ability to deal with pretty much everything else, given a little thought and ingenuity. In a way, with such optimism in this approach, you do more than lighten your physical load; you free your mind from worrying about "what if."
Advantages of Traveling Light
There are a bunch of good things about travelling with a minimalist suitcase.
Mobility: A lighter bag makes navigating the airports, train stations, and cobblestone streets much easier.
Flexibility: One is free to be impulsive and can easily change plans since there are few possessions to be controlled.
Saving: Savings will be done by not charging you the check-in baggage fees and avoiding hiring porters.
Embracing Local Culture
You can shop and bring back special or reflective souvenirs. By packing light and leaving a little space in your luggage, you can purchase yet another exquisite souvenir or maybe a piece of clothing that reflects your journey. This way, you don't spend money only on local economies but also extend your potential for authentic connections.

The Pencil: A Metaphor for the Power of Free Markets
This famous video (by Milton Friedman) illustrates the power and beauty of the free market system in promoting cooperation, efficiency, and harmony among people around the world using a simple pencil.
In Friedman's view, no individual on earth can make a pencil entirely by themselves. The wood is derived from a tree, perhaps located in Washington state. A saw is used to cut down the tree, which requires steel, which is derived from iron ore. The graphite core may originate from mines in South America. The eraser is made from rubber harvested from Malaysian trees. Brass ferrules and yellow paint have unknown origins. Thousands of people contribute to the manufacture of a pencil. It is remarkable that these people do not know each other and might even not like each other if they met. They may speak different languages and practice different religions. Yet they all cooperate and coordinate to produce pencils.
What is the mechanism that allows such a complex global collaboration to occur? As Friedman explains, it is a free market price system. Without any central planning authority, the pricing mechanism provides the information and incentives for people to work together productively.
By purchasing a pencil, you are effectively exchanging a small amount of your labour for the labour of thousands of other people, as facilitated by an impersonal price system. Friedman contends that the free market is essential for economic growth. In addition to promoting productivity efficiency by allocating resources intelligently, they also promote social harmony and peace among the world's diverse peoples.
Without central control, the free market allows people to cooperate and benefit from trading with one another. Friedman's simple story of the pencil serves as an effective metaphor for the incredibly complex global economy and how the free market coordinates production and trade in an unplanned, bottom-up manner for everyone's benefit.
The example illustrates Adam Smith's concept of the "invisible hand" and the interaction it facilitates between individuals and groups. The pencil illustrates how economic freedom leads to social harmony and cooperation.

What is Bionic Reading
A new reading method known as bionic reading is designed to help people read faster and with greater comprehension. A Swiss developer named Renato Casutt invented it in 2022.
<img src="https://ekiledjian2.micro.blog/uploads/2025/e5d9dd47b1.jpg" alt="">
As a result of bionic reading, your eyes are guided through the text by strategically bolding words to create "artificial fixation points." Casutt explains that your brain is more efficient at recognizing words when only parts of them are bolded, enabling you to read more efficiently while still comprehending the full context of the text. The bionic reading algorithm identifies and bolds the most "concise parts of words" - i.e. the first 2-4 letters.
Your eyes jump from bolded part to bolded part as your brain fills in the rest of each word. Doing so reduces the number of letters that need to be processed by your eyes. Currently, Bionic Reading is available as an iPhone/Android app, a Mac app, a Chrome extension, and a web-based text converter.
The bionic reading API can also be integrated into applications and software developed by developers. Some users with dyslexia and ADHD have reported that bionic reading improves their reading speed and comprehension.
At this early stage, no scientific studies have validated these claims. In a recent study conducted by the app Readwise, it was not found that bionic reading improved reading speed.

A Balanced Perspective on ICANN's New Registration Data Request Service (RDRS)
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) new Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) merits attention.
What is RDRS?
It was launched in November 2023 as a free, global service designed to simplify the process of requesting nonpublic generic top-level domain (gTLD) registration information.
The service is particularly relevant in light of privacy laws that require ICANN-accredited registrars to redact personal information from public records.
Who May Use RDRS?
It is intended for individuals and entities with a legitimate interest in accessing nonpublic gTLD registration data. It includes law enforcement agencies, government officials, intellectual property attorneys, cybersecurity professionals, and others who require this information for valid legal or investigative purposes.
The Pros of RDRS
The RDRS addresses privacy concerns while facilitating access to necessary data by standardizing the process of requesting nonpublic gTLD registration data.
The platform facilitates the management of requests, the creation of templates, and the tracking of submission progress.
An array of stakeholders will be able to benefit from this service, including those involved in law enforcement, intellectual property, consumer protection, cybersecurity, and government.
The Cons of RDRS
The RDRS does not guarantee access to the requested registration data. A registrar will conduct a balancing test to determine whether to disclose the data, considering the registrant's privacy rights and the requestor's legitimate interests.
In addition, the RDRS is a voluntary service for registrars, and its effectiveness will be determined by their level of participation.
The Way Forward
RDRS attempts to balance the need for domain registration data access with privacy concerns. The success of this tool will be determined by how responsibly and ethically it is used by the community. As cybersecurity professionals, we advocate for tools and policies that respect privacy while enabling us to protect our digital assets effectively. It will be critical to monitor the evolution of the RDRS as part of this ongoing dialogue.

Debunking Myths: How Life Cycle Assessments Reveal the Lower Environmental Impact of Plastics
TL;DR: Explore the nuanced environmental impacts of plastics through Life Cycle Assessments, revealing a balanced view of their benefits and challenges in sustainable practices.
As a robust tool for evaluating the environmental impact of various materials, including plastics, Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) have emerged. As these assessments have evolved, they offer increasingly sophisticated and complex analyses, but challenges remain concerning the uncertainty of data and the setting of assessment boundaries. In an LCA, it is crucial to establish these boundaries and functional units, which have a significant impact on the results. In the case of plastics, LCAs have shown both positive and negative impacts, depending on the scope and focus of the analysis.
According to a McKinsey report, no single packaging substrate leads in all aspects of sustainability. It emphasizes the importance of considering various aspects of sustainability, including carbon footprints, circularity, and environmental leakage. Plastics have been demonstrated to produce lower total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than alternatives in most cases examined. It is particularly noteworthy in applications such as food packaging, where plastics reduce food spoilage and enhance energy efficiency. In addition, the report acknowledges that plastics pose several challenges, including environmental leakage and ocean pollution, emphasizing the need for a holistic and scientific approach to plastics.
According to the McKinsey analysis, plastics contributed less greenhouse gas emissions than alternatives in 13 out of 14 cases, with savings ranging from 10 to 90 percent. This is significant, particularly when considering both the life cycle of the product and the impact of its use. It is important to remember that the environmental benefits of plastics may diminish in a low-carbon and high-circularity economy.
While plastics are often criticized for their environmental impact, life cycle assessments indicate they can have a lower environmental impact than competing materials in many applications, especially considering factors such as GHG emissions and energy efficiency. This does not negate, however, the importance of addressing the well-known challenges associated with plastics, including waste management and ocean pollution. A nuanced understanding and approach are essential to evaluate the role and impact of plastics on sustainability.

Revealing the True Story Behind the Personal Carbon Footprint: BP's Marketing Masterstroke
A Strategic Insight into the Origins of the Personal Carbon Footprint
An increasingly important concept in the realm of environmental consciousness is the concept of "personal carbon footprint," which outlines how an individual impacts the environment through the emission of greenhouse gases. Its origins are a symbol of environmental concern and a testament to the value of strategic marketing and communication.
The Inception: A Journey Back in Time
As climate change concerns escalated in the early 2000s, the "carbon footprint" concept was pioneered. One of the world's leading oil and gas companies, British Petroleum (BP), is often credited with its creation. BP collaborated with Ogilvy & Mather, a prominent advertising agency, to develop a global marketing campaign.
The Strategic Alliance: BP and Ogilvy & Mather
The agency, known for its innovative and impactful marketing strategies, was tasked with creating a campaign to position BP as a forward-looking and environmentally responsible company. This campaign aimed to shift the focus from industrial carbon emissions to the individual level, encouraging individuals to calculate their own carbon footprints and reduce them.
The Hidden Motivation: A Deeper Understanding
While the surface objective of this campaign appeared to be the promotion of environmental awareness, a more in-depth analysis reveals a more complex motivation. BP effectively shifted the discussion from corporate to individual responsibility by focusing on personal responsibility. In addition to reshaping BP's public image, this strategic redirection subtly diluted the scrutiny of industrial contributors to carbon emissions.
The Impact and Legacy
The term "personal carbon footprint" has become embedded in public discourse, influencing individual behaviours and policies. It serves as a reminder of the intricate relationship between corporate strategy and public messaging. The case illustrates the powerful impact that marketing campaigns can have on society's norms and perceptions, particularly in complex and nuanced domains such as environmental responsibility.
In the context of environmental awareness, the narrative of the personal carbon footprint is a testament to the influence of strategic marketing in influencing societal views. It illustrates the interplay between corporate image management and public messaging, as well as the importance of critically assessing environmental narratives and initiatives.

Hezbollah in Lebanon: Origins, Impact, and Controversies
Since its founding, Hezbollah, a Shiite political and military organization based in Lebanon, has been a source of admiration as well as controversy. To provide a comprehensive understanding of Hezbollah, this post will examine its origins, its raison d'être, as well as its societal, political, and military activities in Lebanon and the contrasting attitudes it evokes among various groups within and outside Lebanon. Additionally, we will discuss the instability caused by Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Hisbollah, which means "Party of God" in Arabic, was founded in the early 1980s during the Lebanese Civil War. Founded in 1982 after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the organization explicitly aims to resist Israeli occupation in Southern Lebanon. The formation of Hezbollah was heavily influenced by Iran, which provided ideological guidance, training, and material support. Syria also played a role in facilitating the organization's activities.
Hezbollah was formed to resist the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon, a cause that garnered considerable support from Lebanon's Shiite community, which felt marginalized and oppressed under Israeli rule. It has portrayed itself (Hezbollah) as a defender of Lebanese sovereignty and a champion of Shiite rights in addition to advancing the influence of the Iranian Islamic Revolution in the region.
Hezbollah is a military organization and a political party in Lebanon. Its significant presence and allies' allies in the Lebanese Parliament allow them to influence policymaking and governance. Through the establishment of a network of social services, including schools, hospitals, and charities, the organization has gained the support of many Shiite communities in Lebanon. However, critics contend that these services consolidate its political power and indoctrinate its supporters.
Hezbollah maintains a formidable military wing and is considered one of the world's most potent non-state armed groups. Over the years, it has engaged in both defensive and offensive operations, including clashes with Israeli forces, participation in the Syrian civil war on the side of the Assad regime, and support for other Shiite militant groups in the region. As a result of its military capabilities, it has become a significant player in regional conflicts.
The activities of Hezbollah have polarized opinions both within Lebanon and internationally. Supporters view it as a legitimate resistance force against Israeli aggression and a provider of vital social services to marginalized communities. They argue that Hezbollah has restored pride and agency among Lebanon's Shiite population.
Critics, however, accuse Hezbollah of undermining the authority of the Lebanese state and maintaining a parallel military structure. They contend that the organization's actions have drawn Lebanon into conflicts and hindered its ability to assert its sovereignty. Furthermore, some countries, including the United States and Israel, consider Hezbollah to be a terrorist organization due to its involvement in regional conflicts and violence.
Hezbollah's involvement in regional conflicts, particularly Syria, has exacerbated sectarian tensions in Lebanon and further destabilized an already fragile political landscape. As a result of its military capability and political influence, the country has had difficulty establishing a stable government, with sectarian divisions often causing gridlock in decision-making.
The creation, purpose, and activities of Hezbollah are complex and multifaceted. Though it has garnered support for its resistance efforts and social services, its military and political power has also raised concerns about Lebanon's stability and sovereignty. Hezbollah's role in Lebanon can be understood by considering these divergent viewpoints and recognizing the organization's significant influence on the country's political, social, and military dynamics.

The Complex Legacy of Yasser Arafat: From Early Life to the Oslo Accords and Beyond
Yasser Arafat led the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) for several decades during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Throughout his life and leadership, he received praise and criticism from various sources. In this blog post, we will discuss Yasser Arafat's early life, rise to power, actions as the leader of the PLO, and relationships with other Arab countries. In addition, we will explore the reasons for his reverence and reviling, which ultimately led to his death.
Early Life and Background:
Yasser Arafat was born in Cairo, Egypt, on August 24, 1929. His original name was Mohammed Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini. His critics have argued that his Egyptian birth undermines his legitimacy as a Palestinian leader. He was of Palestinian descent, coming from a Jerusalem family, but he grew up in Egypt during his formative years.
At the age of four, Arafat lost his mother. As a child, he was influenced by the tumultuous events in the region and the involvement of his family in Palestinian nationalist activities in Cairo.
Rise to Power and Leadership of the PLO:
In the 1950s and 1960s, Arafat began his journey to becoming the leader of the PLO. In 1959, he co-founded Fatah, a Palestinian guerrilla organization whose goal was to liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation. In his leadership, Fatah launched attacks against Israeli military targets, which increased Palestinian visibility in the international arena.
In 1969, Arafat assumed the position of chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), an umbrella organization representing the Palestinian people and their aspirations. He engaged in both armed struggle and diplomatic efforts to achieve Palestinian self-determination. A commitment to the Palestinian cause characterized his leadership.
Actions as Leader of the PLO:
During Yasser Arafat's tenure as PLO leader, there were moments of negotiation and periods of conflict. In 1974, he made a famous address to the United Nations General Assembly advocating for Palestinian rights and recognition. Under Arafat's leadership, the Oslo Accords were signed in 1993, which paved the way for limited Palestinian self-rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
It should be noted, however, that his leadership was not without controversy. Critics argued that during Arafat's tenure, he did not do enough to prevent Palestinian militant groups from carrying out acts of terrorism. He was perceived to have an ambivalent attitude toward violence, which adversely affected his international reputation.
Reverence and Controversy:
Arafat's legacy is complex. Although many Palestinians revered him as a symbol of resistance and champion of their cause, he was severely criticized by some Western countries, particularly Israel. The reasons for this divide are multifaceted.
Palestinians viewed Arafat as a symbol of their struggle for statehood and self-determination. His resilience and commitment to their cause earned him a place in their hearts. Many were disappointed that he was involved in armed resistance and failed to achieve a Palestinian state during his lifetime.
Relations with Arab Countries:
The relationship between Arafat and other Arab countries was often strained. He was caught up in regional power struggles and shifting alliances. There were times when he enjoyed the support of Arab states, particularly during the early years of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Due to his involvement in various conflicts, including the Lebanese Civil War, he was forced to leave Lebanon in 1982.
Death and Legacy:
Yasser Arafat's death in a French hospital on November 11, 2004, sparked speculation and controversy. A stroke was the official cause of death, but rumours of poisoning have never been proven to be false either. He marked the end of an era of strong, globally visible Palestinian leadership with his death.

Keffiyeh: Unveiling Its History, from Ancient Origins to the Icon of Palestinian Freedom
A traditional Middle Eastern headdress known as the Keffiyeh, or shemagh, has been worn by various cultures throughout history. Although it is often associated with Palestinian identity and the struggle for freedom, the Keffiyeh has ancient roots, dispelling the notion that it is exclusively a Palestinian item. This blog post examines the history of the Keffiyeh, its transformation into a symbol of Palestinian resistance, and the dwindling manufacturing tradition in Palestine.
Keffiyeh's adoption by the military
In addition to its intriguing history, the Keffiyeh has been adopted by various military forces. In addition to serving as a symbol of cultural identity and resistance, the Keffiyeh has become part of military attire, particularly in the arid regions of the Middle East.
The military's interest in the Keffiyeh stems from its practicality in desert environments. Its lightweight fabric and versatile design make it ideal for protecting soldiers from the desert's harsh elements, including blowing sand and intense sunlight. In addition to its functional benefits, the Keffiyeh can serve as a form of camouflage by blending in with local populations and terrain.
Military units commonly use the Keffiyeh to shield themselves from the elements. It protects against dust, sandstorms, and the sun's scorching rays when worn around the head and neck. Keffiyehs can also be worn in various styles to accommodate conditions and personal preferences.
In addition to its practical applications, military forces have adopted the Keffiyeh as a tactical measure to establish rapport with local populations in conflict zones. A soldier wearing the Keffiyeh may be perceived as more approachable and culturally sensitive, potentially reducing tensions and facilitating communication with local communities.
Several militaries and armed groups operating in desert regions have incorporated the Keffiyeh into their uniforms. In the past, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued keffiyehs to its soldiers, primarily for functional reasons. Several Arab and North African armies have also done so for similar practical and cultural reasons.
A Versatile Outdoor Tool for Survivalists: The Keffiyeh
Survivalists and outdoor enthusiasts have also come to appreciate the Keffiyeh due to its adaptability and functionality. Similar to its adoption by military forces, survivalists are drawn to the Keffiyeh because of its practical benefits. Its lightweight, breathable fabric and multifunctional design make it an excellent addition to their equipment. Keffiyehs are often used by survivalists in the wilderness as a head covering to protect themselves from the elements, such as the sun's intense rays, biting winds, or blowing dust. Because of its versatility can be fashioned into a makeshift scarf, bandana, or face mask as required. Aside from this, the neutral colours allow survivalists to blend in with their surroundings, making it an ideal accessory for those who prefer to live off the grid and immerse themselves in nature. This has enabled the Keffiyeh to transcend its cultural roots and become a practical and valuable tool for individuals who value self-sufficiency and outdoor exploration.
The Historical Roots
It isn't easy to pinpoint the exact origin of the Keffiyeh due to the mists of time surrounding it. Various cultures in the Middle East have worn this versatile headscarf, including Palestinians, Jordanians, Syrians, and Iraqis. It has been used for thousands of years to protect against harsh desert winds and sun and as a cultural heritage and identity symbol.
The White and Black Keffiyeh: A Symbol of Palestinian Freedom
During the latter half of the 20th century, the black and white Keffiyeh symbolized Palestinian resistance and identity. Yasser Arafat, the charismatic leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), is mainly responsible for this transformation. He consistently wore the Keffiyeh as part of his clothing, making it an emblem of Palestinian solidarity and determination.
The Keffiyeh has become synonymous with the Palestinian cause throughout the Palestinian struggle for self-determination. Due to its distinctive pattern and colours, it has become a powerful symbol of Palestinian identity, serving as a unifying symbol for all Palestinians in their quest for justice, independence, and freedom from occupation.
Manufacturing in Palestine
Handmade Keffiyehs were traditionally produced by skilled artisans, allowing them to be personalized and detailed. Hebron, in Palestine, was known for its Keffiyeh production, with local artisans meticulously crafting these symbolic head scarves. As time passed and economic realities changed, the handmade Keffiyeh industry in Palestine faced challenges.
In Palestine, the only remaining factory producing Keffiyehs is Herbawi. Despite the odds, this factory in Hebron has managed to maintain a tradition that dates back generations. In addition to preserving the art of Keffiyeh production, the Herbawi factory serves as a testimony to the enduring spirit of the Palestinian people.
Conclusion
Its long and diverse history makes the keffiyeh a symbol of resilience and solidarity that transcends national boundaries and ethnic differences. Despite its origins in the broader Middle East, its adoption by the Palestinian people and its association with their struggle for freedom has made it an iconic symbol in the struggle for justice. The black-and-white keffiyeh will always be associated with Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian cause.
The Herbawi factory in Hebron is a reminder of the Keffiyeh's enduring legacy in a world of rapidly evolving traditions.

Exploring Hamas' Evolution: From 1987 Roots to Contemporary Geopolitical Influence and Humanitarian Impact
To understand a complex geopolitical landscape, it is necessary to understand the historical and current dynamics of key players. In 1987, Hamas emerged from the Muslim Brotherhood movement as a Palestinian organization with a multifaceted identity. The organization operates primarily in Gaza and has a dual structure consisting of a political bureau and a military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. However, despite its legislative victory in 2006, its governance is characterized by contention and conflict, particularly with the Palestinian Authority.
International scrutiny and debate have surrounded Hamas' stance. Although it has received criticism for its initial charter and position towards Israel, shifts in its policy positions have been noted over time, including a document published in 2017 that suggested a willingness to accept interim geopolitical boundaries. However, it has refused to recognize Israel's right to exist. It continues to support armed conflict, leading several countries, including the United States and the European Union, to designate it as a terrorist organization.
There has been a significant humanitarian impact on the Gaza Strip as a result of the group's actions, often resulting in military responses and a cycle of violence. In terms of engagement strategies with Hamas, the international community remains divided. As a result of Hamas' violent tactics, some advocate isolation and strong opposition. However, others contend that dialogue and addressing the root causes of Hamas support - such as economic deprivation and political frustration - would be more effective in achieving peace and stability. This nuanced understanding is essential for those seeking long-term solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Drought at the Crossroads: How the Panama Canal's Water Crisis is Reshaping Global Trade
TL;DR: Facing its driest period in over a century, the Panama Canal's historic drought is impacting global trade by necessitating draft reductions and fewer transits, potentially raising shipping costs and fueling inflation. This situation threatens the smooth flow of goods, from consumer products to energy, and could result in significant economic repercussions as the world grapples with climate change's growing impact on critical trade infrastructure.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————
A historic drought is affecting the Panama Canal, an engineering marvel and a vital conduit for global trade. This has forced the Panama Canal Authority to take drastic measures to conserve water and manage maritime traffic. Due to the drought, the canal has experienced one of its driest years in over a century, with rainfall around the canal area 30-50% below normal.
Historically, the canal has been modified to accommodate larger vessels, but the current drought has reversed this trend. A decrease in the water level in the Gatun Lake, the canal's main reservoir, has reduced the maximum ship weight and the number of crossings per day. The United States accounted for 72.5% of the cargo passing through the canal in fiscal year 2021. Various goods are transported through the canal, from consumer products to energy resources, which impacts countries and industries worldwide.
It is essential to reduce a ship's draft, which limits the depth at which it can be submerged. As a result of the draft reduction, ships are either required to carry less cargo or offload goods to be transported across the isthmus by other means. Also, the number of vessels that transit daily has been reduced from 36 to 38 to conserve water.
This situation has a domino effect on the global supply chain. By preventing large ships from passing through or requiring them to carry less cargo, the volume of goods transported is reduced. In the absence of a corresponding reduction in demand, the reduction in supply can increase shipping costs and contribute to inflationary pressures. Furthermore, the canal's revenue is expected to decline by up to $200 million due to these restrictions, highlighting the significant economic impact of this drought.
Climate change presents a broader challenge to international trade and economies through its impact on the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal Authority is grappling with the challenge of maintaining commerce flow and addressing future water management to sustain operations. These efforts must be undertaken to mitigate the economic repercussions that ripple through global markets, affecting everything from consumer prices to energy supplies. The canal's response to this environmental challenge will set a precedent for how similar infrastructures worldwide may cope with the increasing threat of climate change.
